I don't mind CAC stickered coins for the most part. I own more than a handful and in most cases can see why they(CAC), or anyone for that matter who has enough experience and years handling various grades, would choose examples as standout for the grade. However, every so often a coin comes along, similar to that feeling you get when you see some assigned grades on holders and go

What is so special out of this 1 of 119 graded at the level shown from the TPG? I just don't see it. I see some spots and a partial tone type stain on the obverse. Those marks on each side are actually detracting to the eye appeal and do not enhance this example to a place of "best of the grade in show". Am I far off here in your POV?

Is CAC to be taken as a serious authority or just a clever marketing tool to create the illusion of "expertise"?

Do most of you need CAC to help you identify the cherries of the respective grade or do you think that they're only useful for the newbies of the hobby?

I think CAC is a Quack . this coin to me shows no eye appeal. If that's toning on obverse and reverse then give it to the toning fans . don't get me wrong , the coin is a beauty with blazing luster, but that black and brown crap? They are saying FB But I don't see it with these photos .

I find the biggest value of CAC is buying coins online by photo as they provide a second opinion on the coin. CAC misses on some coins and I would not buy OP coin with or without a sticker. If you owned the coin or were going to buy the coin, you could call JA at CAC and he would tell you why he gave the coin a sticker.

Its toning, and I'm sure it looks better in hand. Often toning looks quite bad on pictures (especially ones like these, no offense).
Looks like a really nice coin

CAC green bean simply means that a coin is solid in the grade which the TPG assigned it. It's really more just a way for a would-be collector to gain a bit of confidence that the PCGS grade of this coin is, in CAC's opinion, accurate, and that this coin is a good quality representative of its assigned grade.

The toning has nothing to do with it; CAC will sticker everything from blast white and brilliant luster gems to heavily toned monsters. Eye appeal is not always the main factor. In this case, CAC is not necessarily claiming that this is an exceptionally beautiful or pretty MS67 FSB Merc, just that they agree that the coin is worthy of being slabbed as MS67 FSB; they leave it up to you to decide if the eye appeal is there or if you'd prefer less or more toning.

I know this seller, and the coins tend to look quite a bit better in hand; I purchased my 1806 50c there and it ended up being quite a bit nicer than the photos.

I'm curious where this figure comes from? Are you saying only 119 1942-D dimes have graded 67FB at PCGS? I see 565 with 73 finer.

Here's likely how it looked when CAC saw it: http://coins.ha.com/itm/mercury-dim...Lot=1x=0&y=0

Possibly dipped and not correctly rinsed?

For the record, this is not mine. I happened upon perusing web offerings as, like most of you, I love obsessing over coins at night.

I am not impressed with the CAC sticker. I understand the "solid in the grade" test, but really, isn't this determination of grade getting out of hand? Pretty soon we will have the "XYZ" blessing of the CAC stickered PCGS certified 1959 Lincoln 1 cent. I would have hoped that CAC would take eye appeal into consideration, but from what I've seen, they don't. At all. I understand that eye appeal is subjective, but I would bet 80-90% of those surveyed would say an ugly coin is an ugly coin. That is what would be important to many of use who only, or mostly, make purchases through photos.
