I don't know that I would call myself a real collector, but I have always kept wheat pennies and any dollar coins, especially bicentennials. I have a stack of about 15 of those that I are still only worth $1 each. My grandfather was the collector, though he was unfortunately poor and could not afford anything of extreme value. He did have the foresight to grab a roll of 1964 Kennedy half dollars, which has remained in its role since 1964 and inside a plastic tube. He died in 1975 so his collection ends there. My dad was never a collector and the coins sat in a closet in my grandmother's house since 1975. With the death of my grandma and then my dad in the last year my sisters and I have inherited the collection. There are a lot of interesting coins- way too many to list here. I was amused to have found a jar with what must be close to 5000 wheat pennies, LOL. Dare I go through them looking for rare dates? My pap was no dummy- I can safely assume they are all common ones.

First, You should try and go through the coins to look for error, low mintage, and varieties. You can ask questions here at CCF.

I have them all listed out in an excel spreadsheet along with my crude guess as to what their value range might be based on their condition. A lot of them are just worth their silver content, so I will wait to see what happens with the silver price before I even consider selling those. Some of them are in Whitman books, but in most cases the rarest spots are empty. All I have really done so far is done a once-over. I may ask for some opinions here related to the condition of some of the coins when I have the energy to go back through them again.

Welcome, John!
And definitely search those pennies... I put coins in pasta jars and make an error every once in a while... too much trouble to fish one coin usually out of 1,000 or so...
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

First off: Go Polar Bears... unless you're East Side, then Go Bees! Hey, John, are there any old tokens in the collection from Fairmont? If so, I can give you an idea on rarity/value. There's a lot of common coal scrip and transportation tokens from Fairmont, but there are some known rarities too. Unfortunately, Watson's Coins & Antiques recently closed its 216 Adams Street storefront, but I believe he's still around if you have questions about the coins.

I am definitely a Bee, captainrich! :) My daughter will be a junior at East Fairmont this fall. I have a few scattered odd things from various world fairs. Pretty cool stuff without much value. Nothing from the Fairmont area, though. I grew up in the Wellsburg area, which is between Wheeling and Weirton.
