I received an email that an estate sell is starting today. I looked at the images and saw only State Quarter proof sets, but I decided to go anyways. Here is what I got. That was all of the silver they had. I think I overpaid but not by a lot. Nonetheless, I am happy

Nice score. Add up the face value of the silver and multiply by 14. Then compare that number to what you paid

I used to love going to estate sales that had coins...so much fun ! -- Got some lots of unsearched Wheats many different times.. So many different kinds of coins can pop up at those. Wish I could afford to go out and hit a couple this summer. Gratz on your pickups ! ---

Cascade, what does it give me? When I add everything up I get a very small difference than what I paid.

What Cascade gave you is a way to calculate silver melt value. If you paid at or below that, you did really well.

Nice buys! The most I've ever found at an estate sale is a pair of proof sets (71 & 72).

I get a $6.40 difference. Did I do good?

The last time I went to an estate sale, there were lots of CC Morgan's in mint boxes. They are way out of my price range right now, so I had to pass. People were grabbing them by the dozen

Then you paid $6.40 above melt. As long as the coins and folders are in good condition, you probably did okay.
Another way to look at it...
If you are going to finish out the folders or use the coins for upgrading your collection then you probably did good.
If you are just going to add them to your silver stack, then you probably overpaid.

Anyway, you had fun! Learn how to adjust that formula as the price of silver changes, then just take a little calculator with you next time.

Talked with a long time coin collector/dealer (since passed) who said he went to an auction (maybe 20 years ago), found 8 GSA morgans. He bid $20, and his was the only bid. Lacking interest in anything else, he went to settle up with the auctioneer's assistant, and started calculating how much he owed, when he was told he had purchased all 8 for $20.
