Before I continue on with this post, I first apologize for the potential length of it, so I will try to keep this as short and sweet as possible while still including everything.
I am by no means an expert in photography, but I am not a complete beginner either. "Casual, but not casual" might sum up my experience. However, I am entirely new to coin photography. I am currently running on a $0 budget as of right now (in between checks, which is awesome.) Below are some current pictures of my new, and very ghetto-rigged, setup:

I am running with a Nikon D3200, stock lens (18-55mm), an older tripod I got many years ago, a very dead hard drive on the back leg as a counterbalance, a piece of printer paper, and two manilla folders that have been sacraficed for a greater good. I have tested with various lighting conditions, no flash, without manilla folders and the like. And so far, this seems to be the best for what little money that I can spare at this given moment. Below is a side by side with two minor differences.

No edits have been made to the photos other than cropping out the background, and image optimizing so they could be hosted on here.
The left image is taken with flash, at 1/100 speed, 400 ISO, and without a manilla folder on top of my little "box." The right, same camera settings, just with a manilla folder on top. To me, the coin on the right seems to be slightly darker (? my eyes have "fun" detecting subtle light changes. e.g.: I can't tell the difference most times.) than the other while the one of the left looks more realistic in color. What is your opinion on this? Do I have it right, entirely wrong, or just flopped?
That's all that I currently have. But I'm interested in hearing your guys' feedback. What do you recommend that I change, add, remove, etc.
