Before I continue on with this post, I first apologize for the potential length of it, so I will try to keep this as short and sweet as possible while still including everything.
I am by no means an expert in photography, but I am not a complete beginner either. "Casual, but not casual" might sum up my experience. However, I am entirely new to coin photography. I am currently running on a $0 budget as of right now (in between checks, which is awesome.) Below are some current pictures of my new, and very ghetto-rigged, setup:

I am running with a Nikon D3200, stock lens (18-55mm), an older tripod I got many years ago, a very dead hard drive on the back leg as a counterbalance, a piece of printer paper, and two manilla folders that have been sacraficed for a greater good. I have tested with various lighting conditions, no flash, without manilla folders and the like. And so far, this seems to be the best for what little money that I can spare at this given moment. Below is a side by side with two minor differences.

Coin-Photography-Experiment-And-Opinions-Wanted

No edits have been made to the photos other than cropping out the background, and image optimizing so they could be hosted on here.
The left image is taken with flash, at 1/100 speed, 400 ISO, and without a manilla folder on top of my little "box." The right, same camera settings, just with a manilla folder on top. To me, the coin on the right seems to be slightly darker (? my eyes have "fun" detecting subtle light changes. e.g.: I can't tell the difference most times.) than the other while the one of the left looks more realistic in color. What is your opinion on this? Do I have it right, entirely wrong, or just flopped?

That's all that I currently have. But I'm interested in hearing your guys' feedback. What do you recommend that I change, add, remove, etc.

I would agree that the image on the let may be slightly brighter, the only thing I could suggest is to remove the coin from the 2x2 before picture time, as the mylar may make the image fuzzier, or give you grieve with lighting.

That's the thing, though. I've put them into the holders for the sake of protection, but don't want to remove them just for the sake of pictures. Would it just be best to find a work around for now, or...?

from your set up it looks like you have 3 light sources, the desk lamp, the overhead lights, and any window near by (flash if used). you need to control the light as much as possible. you could build light diffusers to help remove glare.

use a thin white sheet, and build an open frame over your work area, drape the sheet over it etc

I downloaded the image, and tried opening in DPP, but it won't open properly. Can someone else try? Looks OK in my browser but DPP just shows magenta.

It opened fine in PSPx8 and Paint.

DPP shows the magenta screen as well for me.

I personally prefer 5500 K (Kelvin) daylight CFL light sources. You might want to consider performing various tests using a 'single' type of light source per test each time so as to eliminate the more difficult to manage multiple variables syndrome...

Just in case one is unfamiliar with this subject check out this Pentax URL to differentiate Kelvin temps.:
