Got this one in change.

Is this the way modern quarters usually tone?
Toned?-2006-D-North-Dakota-Quarter

I call this "The Sun Rises, Casting Away The Darkness" reverse.

The darkened area appears dark grey with some rainbow affect in it.

Just thought it looked neat how it stopped just after hitting the suns rays.

That's what I thought when I 1st got...but the coloring in hand is dark grey with some purple and red mixed in, not brown and definitely not dirt.
Looks very similar in color to some I have seen on the Toned Coin thread. Just never seen part of a coin look this dark with the rest not even dimmed.

I will try to take better pics. Have always had a hard time showing actual look of a toned coin.

Here we go. This is a much better representation of what it actually looks like in hand. No editing, just took new picture at an angle.

Is this NT or something else?

I would guess that it was stuck "under" something. ...which left the shiny part more intact and the shaded part exposed.
Someone saw it and said "A QUARTER!"...retrieved it from its entrapment and now it's journey has brought it to your hands...
But that's just a guess...

However it was done it works perfectly with this reverse art imo. Worthy of a "title"

Its either gonna be 1 of these 2.

1.The Sun Rises, Casting Away The Darkness, or
2. Stepping out of the Darkness.

I know a little crazy....but I'm going to put in a 2x2 and label it with title.

Which one is best 1 or 2?

Very interesting coin ... and I like interesting coins

I also like the #2 choice.

Just a suggestion, try setting a nickel on the lighter part.
My guess is that this coin was sitting with other coins and
the dark part was exposed, the lighter part was covered by,
possibly a nickel. The coins were sitting in some environment
that caused the exposed parts of coins to darken.

I did...it was either a dime or nickel they both fit pretty well.
