I have not come across (in person) a cent with this kind of toning. What is it called?

Carbon spots. This is what happens when spit (or something else) gets on a coin.

I'm not talking about the carbon spots, I'm talking about the color of the coin.

Looks like its been rubbed so much that the natural brown surface has come off leaving exposed raw copper that gives it a cleaned look?
Cant tell if it still has luster, though... Hard to tell.

Yes it still has its luster.
If raw copper means that it looks like it's gunmetal-ish in color than yes it's "raw copper" toning.

According to your photo I see a light pinkish color which usually indicates the coin has been cleaned . also I'm not seeing any luster in your photo . So your coin in hand is probably different from what we are seeing .

looks cleaned. Hopefully what you are seeing in hand is different than what we are seeing.

Pink?
Women are color blind, so if all of you've responded are seeing pinkish and are of the male species then maybe it is I who is only seeing gunmetal.
Will someone please post a pic of a cleaned penny?

I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary. Looks like a normal Wheat cent to me.

Does it still look pink? I used the other for my own comparison/reference.

Quote: Women are color blind Actually, less than 1% of women are colorblind, however around 8% of men are colorblind (including me, I suffer from moderate Red/green colorblindness) Its also been proven that women can see more colors than men.

I don't think it was "cleaned", I think it was dipped (maybe in a misguided attempt to remove the carbon spots).

Quote: Does it hinder your grading capabilities? Nope, it might change my opinion on the eye appeal of certain coins... But all eye appeal really is is an opinion so... Getting back to the OP's coin, Quote: I think it was dipped , but dipping copper cleans it, as it does damage the surface unlike what happens to silver/gold.
