Hi All, Just picked up this 1857 'O' mint mark half eagle and would like your thoughts on whether it would be worth having it graded and slabbed. Sorry about the picture quality but I only had a cell phone available. Thanks

From these photos, I can only venture a guess at the grade...

Agree cleaned, but I'm at a VF grade.

Thanks, appreciate the replies and info so far. My question is, do you think it is worthy of being professionally graded?

Looks like VF-30 details, cleaned.
This is a scarce date and is worth quite a bit, even when cleaned and worn to VF details. A slabbed coin should be easier to sell (and will likely fetch a higher price) if and when you decide to put it up for sale. I think it would be worth investing the grading fee.
I'd probably pick ANACS for this piece since they are reliable for authentication and would charge less than PCGS or NGC.

It looks like VF cleaned details. If you're going to sell it soon, have ANACS slab it to save money. For now just check the weight. It should be a little over 8 grams. Nice date to have!

I would almost say polished, not just cleaned. Not worth grading.

The coin in hand does not look polished or cleaned but has obviously been in circulation at some time. I will try to post better pictures when I can get my hands on a decent camera.

Rare mintage. I think you should try grading it.

I agree with the "worth grading" option. Graders tend to be (historically) a bit more lenient on grading the more scarce gold coins as to cleaning. However, I'm still trying to get an 1840-O Broad Mill Half Eagle through myself. Definitely give ANACS a try. I need that one by the way... PG

VF-30 that may or may not come back as cleaned. Still worth it to certify... it's a one of three tough NO HEs from the '55-'57 run, and the last no motto NO Half Eagle before the mint resumed coining HE's in 1892.

I would not send to ANACS. If you want to sell it, send it to NGC or PCGS through a dealer that has a membership. If you don't want to sell it, keep it raw until you do. Then get it certified by whatever service and whatever standards are in use at the time. I'm glad I did not spend a bunch of money getting ANACS certificates 20 years ago that are now using too tight standards and worthless as everyone wants plastic slabs.
