I cannot believe this coin that is being marketed... this is my only explanation of the brainstorming happening at the RCM...

It merits worst coin design by RCM, not just for 2016 but for all time. It's a "toy" that any kid or kid at heart would discard after a minute at most. No Canadian relevance whatsoever. No historical connection in any way... Overpriced...quite shameful in every aspect.
Quote: Just read some of the reviews on the mint site....
Just did that again because last time I looked, it was taking a beating. The initial reviews were almost all negative but recent reviews are extremely glowing. This one get a 3.9 out of 5 stars!? That is relatively low by RCM standards but still incredible.
Reminds me of the old beer ad: "Those who like it, like it a lot." (except I actually like Keith's...a lot)
I wonder what PCGS would do, if this was submitted? Would the ball and coin be graded separately? Maybe a double slab...

Given RCM's inclination to paste fantasy characters from comic books and so forth on Canadian coin, I put this in the same category that illustrates that it sells anything to try make a buck.
But the maze coin also is a great example of how ideas and things in general change with time. In the 60s (my earliest memory) I'd say this simple plastic maze was geared to about a 6 year old age group, mainly to teach hand/eye coordination. Back in those days there was not a lot of choices or need for toys because kids mostly played outside with other kids. Then a bit later came along a huge first advancement in the home entertainment age - that paddle game, hitting the little ball back and forth on the TV screen. What fun! Everyone I knew had one, hours and hours spent, bonk bonk. Then Atari and on and on, now it seems every small child has an iPad to play games on with sounds and realistic graphics in order to keep themselves amused.
So in the Year 2016 RCM reaches back into dusty the dusty and cobwebby archives of yesteryear and the silver maze coin makes an appearance, this time targeted to an adult segment. Obviously some buyers think it's quite a novel item for the price of $114 and that's okay, each to their own and all. Who would have thought this would happen? Quite A-Mazing actually.

From the mint website reviews:
"Cannot understand why RCM could not place a clear plastic film over coin to prevent ball from falling out. Sent three coins to NGC, there not sure it's even gradable. They do not want to be liable for lost ball. Poor design by RCM "

Agree 100%.
I don't even call it a coin. It is just a toy on top of a coin.
Serious coin collector would not touch it with a ten foot pole. Clearly the coin is aimed at a younger demographic if you look at the RCM comments. Comments such as "wow", "A-maze-ing" and "fun", "kids loved it" reflect the juvenile aspect of the coin.
Despite the glowing reviews of the coin, it is nowhere near a sell out. Pretty soon you can get it at 50% off.
Yes, to continue this "innovation", everything could be "a coin".
This one good for collection of "weird items minted by RCM". Depends on the price, I would agree to buy the 2017 Canada Shaped set, when each coin in the set will be Province-shaped
Really interesting, how this design was chosen from endless possibilities?
