You are aware that these are problem coins? The 84 rim damage, 82 and 96 cleaned and polished. The coins appear genuine, but you will need to do the weight and magnet test. For your $25 you are basically stacking silver which is OK if that is goal.

Yes basically stacking silver and also trying to buy a few lower dollar ones to review and compare with my graded/slabbed ones so I can learn. I knew the 84 rim damage and thought there was something with the others they looked too polished for the condition but I didn't know why.
Two additional questions please:
I have a few books on Morgans but they really don't how to tell a polished or cleaned coin from one that isn't. What's a good primer on just collecting coins in general not specific ones that covers things like this?
It seems like any Morgan that does for under $20 (shipping included) looks like it was run over by a train (I think they are called "culls"). What's a fair price for a basic Morgan average date and fair condition (not flattened with the rim and details worn off)?

To me it is always nice to pick up Morgan dollars. As posted above these three have problems. I would feel better paying less than $20 for them. Or spending the $25 range for ones with out problems.

Jax, find a good b&m and make friends with them. I get *BU* morgans for $25 all the time because I have a great relationship with the owner. As for books on morgans, the best general one I'd the Morgan dollar Red Book by Q. David Bowers. However polished coins are not morgan specific. I recommend getting a book that deals specifically with problem coin detection. I'm sure someone has a good recommendation for that. Also, stick around here and try your skills in the grading forums. After a few months you'll have a good handle on things. After a year or so, if you stick around and soak it all in, you'll feel like a master

GR58 - thanks. I followed the link and went to "cheap Morgan dollars" and the first auction listed looks highly problematic to me. I realize it probably is just a search and post that posts the links http://www.ebay.com/itm/15215735474...ig_cvip=true Cascade - thanks also. Bowers Red Book is my go to book for Morgans I read it constantly. I agree what I need is a generic book that deals specifically with problem coin detection

Looks like someone had the auction pulled ebay seems to be as thick with fakes as a mongrel dig is with fleas Is there a list of good sellers or a good place to go to buy? I think I am ok with the certified coins but I want to buy lose Morgans in the $20 to $25 dollar range. Not in quantity but maybe one or two a week.Am I better off saving up and buying a roll of 20?

Welcome, I like Morgans, too. Purty ones, with clear complexions. And I'm a bargain hunter, nature of the beast.

If Morgan's are your focus I suggest buying a single slabbed MS one from PCGS or NGC. A 62-64 grade should be fine. That will give you a reference for what an uncleaned coin looks like. Compare it to the 2 cleaned ones you posted above. IMO you want to avoid cleaned coins just because your resale value won't be very good. Once you get better at distinguishing cleaned from original you will be in good shape. You could still run into fakes but that's a whole other issue. Anyway , you'll learn a lot from this site!

That's good advice from LibertyEagle and since you have at least that MS-64 example you should be able to make some good comparisons. Shopping in the $25-30 range should yield decent common-date, pre-1921 Morgans in VF or better and without problems. The three coins in your first post are all "culls" due to the problems. You might want to unload them on ebay or trade them in towards better coins. If you are going to stack Morgans you might as well choose good ones!
