I am a collector of Trade dollars and medallians, with some interest in world coins. Have followed the former for a while and look forward to joining in on some good conversation.

Welcome - Tell us first about your collecting interests, and second how your city came to be called Medicine Hat.

I LOVE Trade dollars and medallions. Most of mine are from Atlantic Canada. We do have some Alberta trade token collector on this forum though. Welcome aboard.

Thank for the welcome all. I do collect everything, but try and focus on Trade dollars and world coins (mainly European countries). As for the name of our town Medicine Hat. Many years ago, so the story goes, there was a great battle between the Cree and the Blackfoot on the banks of a southern Alberta river. The Cree fought valiantly until their medicine man deserted them... losing his headdress in mid-stream as he fled to the safety of the opposite shore. Believing this to be a bad omen, the Cree put down their weapons and we're massacred by the Blackfoot. The site of this tragedy was called "Saamis" an Native American word , meaning"Medicine man's hat". Years later, in 1882, when the Royal Northwest Mounted Police and the CPR roadbuilders settled in the area, the Native name was then translated and shortened to Medicine Hat.

Yes, Hatters. And when we refer to the city, we simply call it the Hat. As in welcome to the Hat.
