Well, I will start off with what I know. I have two 1921-P Morgans both with the 17-Berry reverse. I believe that they both have infrequent reeding, is this correct? (see pic)

1921-P-Morgan-VAM-Help-Please!

The bottom one is there for reference, the top 2 are inf. reeded correct?

One of them I am 90% sure is VAM-27A, by the 3 small die gouges above the S & T in STATES.

The other I am having trouble placing. I am limited to what I can see because I only have a magnifying glass, no scope. Though I do see a small die crack that runs along the top of the AMER in AMERICA, and another along the top of TAT in STATES. Can anyone suggest some things that I might be able to see with a glass that will help me attribute it?

Being infrequently reeded with a 17 berry reverse limits the possible VAMS to 4,13, 25-29, and 44 and their subvarities, correct?

The inf. reeded VAMs are in the top 100 morgan VAMs, right? Would it be worth sending them both off for certification? If so where should I send them?

Thanks for the help! I am going to keep looking at this other one and see if I can find anything else.

Also, is there someplace to find VAM values?

I have a few of these I am trying to attribute right now myself, SuperDave will surely be along to help. I can tell you that , yes, they are Infrequently reeded and I am sure that pictures of the obv and rev would be helpful. After that, I am at a loss. I am just beginning to get familiar with these 21's and they can be tough to nail down.

As for values, VAMworld usually has values for various VAM numbers, but sometimes they are links that lead to NGC and give prices which I think are for non-attributed coins. You can search Heritage or Teletrade to find past prices for specific VAM's. I don't have any slabbed top 100 coins so I am not sure which companies will recognize all of them.

I posted some detailed pics of the reverse a while ago, I'm sure they are on the next page of posts. It should be the only thread started by me, if you would like to take a peak.

I know, I love these 21's. I need to stop bidding on them on ebay, I think I have another 4 or 5 on the way. I just hate to see someone else get a deal.

MorganNoob,

The top two coins are definitely wide/infrequently reeded varieties. If the one coin you have is a 27A you will have a hard time finding an accurate value. I have the same coin and have been looking for that information. The best way to establish a value where little price history is available, is to take it to a coin show and ask around.

As for the other coin, die cracks are very common for 1921, and can be very similar for different varieties. This makes it difficult to identify the variety by them. Quite often a microscope is needed for identification. Many times cracks are not mentioned at all in the VAM listing because other features of the variety are more definitively identifiable. If you post some pics, we might be able to help with indentification.

If you are looking to have your coin graded you can look on the Vamworld website for a list of grading companies that will certify variety coins. You will first want to establish an approximate grade for the coin to determine if it is worth the cost of having it graded. You can post pictures on the grading forum here and get a pretty go idea.

Aside VAM-27A, Infrequent Reeding 1921's are differentiated by various combinations of doubling/tripling on the obverse, plus VAM-4 which is characterized by really significant doubling on the "n" in "In." It'll be easily visible in a magnifying glass.

The obverse doubling, not so much. Look at the 9 in the date, the neck and jawline, and the left stars. Unfortunately, you might need 20x or more to clearly see if it's doubling or tripling.
