If the price is right there are many problem coins I don't mind buying.
Unless I see a staple scratch ... Those I can't stand

Eye appeal is key. Distracting damage and unattractive toning are my main turn-offs, but I can live with an inconspicuous scratch and love some quality toning. I can always work with the price if I really like the coin.

Toning, milk spots, carbon spots, and most general imperfections.

Poor value for money.
I will take any and all detracting factors into account. The coin may be in quite poor condition, and it is possible that still may buy it.
Yet, I may be turned away from a pristine coin, simply because the asking price is too high.

And I'll also add if the date is missing too.

I am happy to accept any coin, even to as far as to be barely identifiable. Such is the case with cheap ancient coins; they present an enjoyable challenge to a full identification, which lies at the very heart of numismatics.

Boring, uninspired designs, and tacky NIFC.
Most world coins from the 70s and 80s are just no fun to collect. Dutch coins from the 80s in particular.
And gimmick coins... colorized, scratch n sniff, 3D, embedded jewels, etc etc. I don't understand how they are just so popular.

Quote: If a coin has ANY sort of problem then I don't want it. I would rather wait for a problem free coin to show up A good attitude if you can easily afford four and five figure coins, or you collect common material. Some of us don't have that luxury. The "common" stuff I need now in low grade with problems is in the mid three figures. Low grade problem free? At least low four figures. I live with problem pieces because it's all I can afford.

Harsh cleanings and polishing. Holes and dateless coins are turnoffs too. Dateless error coins (off center) and Buffalo nickels from circulation are fine though.

I live with problem pieces because it's all I can afford. I try to collect, among other things, Russian 18th and 19th century copper (and the occasional silver, but it's less of a problem there). Most of the supply for those is metal detecting finds. Obvious pitting and/or encrustation is pretty much normal. So yeah, I'm just about in the same situation: a coin without obvious environmental damage or other problems is often worth in the low four figures, and I'd rather buy a normal MD find for low-mid three figures (or, sometimes, a particularly bad one for even less). That's in rubles, mind you - low four figures is about $25

nothing with major damage for sure. I don't even usually buy anything that has any damage at all. an old cleaning if not too bad doesn't usually bother me but I probably wont buy it unless it uber cheap. it should probably fit in my collection somehow too, I actually don't collect all coins. eye appeal goes further than technical grade for me, I would much rather have an AU55 or 58 with nice eye appeal than an MS61 or 62 that's all banged up with bad toning
