Please provide comments. I put in a bid on the coin and it sold for double of what I was willing to pay. I had the coin at AU55 with a upside of AU58. There was also some funky spots on the reverse. If this coin grades AU55 Details, the buyer lost his shirt. See Link below.

Significant chance that's artificial toning in my opinion. Seems this seller has quite a few coins listed with suspect toning.

Don't like the toning on this Capped Bust Half either. If NT these sell for big bucks at Heritage/Stacks.

Notice that very few of the Seller's "better" coins are TPG. If they were TPG'd they would bring more money. The problem is they won't receive clean grades. The Seller knows this.

Westernsky, you are 100% correct, and I did not pick that up when I placed a losing bid on the Trade dollar. I accepted the fact that the coin could grade AT or Details and factored that into what I was willing to risk.

Joe2007, the seller is using greed to his advantage on the toned coins as the bidder's know if the coin grades NT there is a big upside. The toning on the seller's raw coins are all on the fence from photos of grading AT or NT.

Exactly.....a risky purchase. Buyer will own that one for a long time.

I'm not even sure it's real, never mind the toning.

Who in their right mind pays $884 for a raw example of one of the most counterfeited 19th century coins in US history, much less with questionable color?

Seller is using the usual "selling for a friend" "Recently inherited" garbage as a front to deflect knowledge or responsibility. Many of his coins show clear evidence of abrasive cleaning / whizzing and the same fakey AT.

This "1876 Trade dollar" he sold is a stone-cold fake, 100% rotten.

Edit: Seller has purchased 34 coins in the last 6 months. Why would he be buying more coins if he's selling them for a friend? I wonder if he's cracking out coins from details holders and then passing them off as raw fresh coins to unsuspecting suckers who are in for a surprise when they try to get it slabbed?

You're better off having lost the bidding on this "gem." Count yourself lucky.

My standard comment.
For that much money it HAS to be slabbed.

I disagree. Looks genuine, but EF and cleaned.

The OP coin has been AT'ed though. I think you did well to miss out on it.

I think it went for that price in part because he wrote MS-65 on the flip. Obviously it didn't get that kind of money but I think it may have had a psycological effect on some people of making them think that even if MS-65 is too high that it is still uncirculated. From what I can tell by looking at price guides it is around MS-60 money. I'm working on a type set and need a Trade dollar. Normally I prefer raw coins for my 7070 (saves effort and less premium compared to slabs) but there is no way I'm buying a raw one of these guys!
