My mechanic called me this afternoon, said he has a guy in his
shop wanting to sell a 10 oz. Credit Suisse gold bar. Asked if I
wanted to come look at it. Only five minutes away ...

When I got there the bar looks good. Weighed 200 DWT / 10 oz.

Before I got there they had filed a notch into it ... Was not plated.

I called the LCS for advice. They said the only way they would buy
that bar, would be to take it to NTR and have them test and melt it.
NTR would have been closed before we could get there.

So I passed

The guys story was he needed money for a trip to New Orleans

The guy said he would sell it for $3500 ... Then went to $2500.

It was very tempting ... But I passed ... I would have to be sure.

What would you have done?

I would have passed. Even if genuine, it could have been stolen.

hmmmm.... $13,300.00 bar being sold for $3500.00 when he could go to almost any pawn shop and easily get double that. seems fishy to me. Did you test the bar?

At that price I'd confirm the dimensions are accurate and offer them $3500 assuming the seller would allow cutting the bar while they're there. These are small bars and if they are not plated and the core tests good you've got $10k profit.

With a fake 10 ounce gold bar that has a tungsten* core,
the gold covering can be plenty thick enough not to reveal the core, even with a very deep check test filing nick.

If it needed to be tested in the first place to assure an intending buyer,
it would be a sure sign for me to give this piece a VERY wide berth.

* tungsten has the same density as pure gold.
A bullion dealer would test, using an ultrasonic instrument, XRF useless in this case.

Yes ... Pensacola area

------------------

The guy had a story ....

His daughter had passed away in New Orleans and he needed to get there.

All I had with me was a pocket scale. The shop I work at was closed,
the main shop was 20 minutes away and would be closed before we could
get there.

I told the guy if he waited until morning, I could have it tested and would
give him more .. but he said he had to leave for New Orleans.

Of course .. something seemed off .. that is why I did not buy it.
He did say we could drill it .. But at that point I felt I wanted
to have NTR say it was good .. because that is who I would have
sold it to.

Smells fishy. I think it was a wise decision to walk regardless if your gut told you it was gold. Might be worth a call to the local PD to see if any reported robberies. If it is real, there must be a reason he didn't pawn it quick

Anyone who wants to sell gold THAT cheap must have rocks in their head,
or there must be some sort of serious criminality involved.
Or both.

"the guy had a story" as all scammers must in order to get your attention.

Like someone else said, this guy would have had no problem going to a pawn shop or jewelry shop and selling it for way more.

It was likely stolen...but also could have been fake.

Use your instinct on anything like that...if it doesn't feel right then walk away...good job.

Pass on it.

But, if you can, sneak a photo or video the bar and seller.

It could be useful later on!

How to make a million dollars?
Start off with $10 million.

Both buyer if he goes through with it,
and the seller, when he gets caught:
all loosers.
