Most world collectors at some point will come across coinage from German Africa at some point, maybe even German New Guinea or German Kiautschou (China), but until yesterday, I was completely unaware of German Palestinian Settlements! Here is a link to the wikipedia page for Sarona, a German Palestinian settlement which was settled by a German sect called the Templars: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarona_(colony)Going through a pile of Germanic tokens and Jetons I needed to attribute, I found a set of these, here is the 40 pfennig example: The colony of Sarona was located in present day Tel Aviv, and apparently, there were some other German colonies in Palestine as well!

Wow! This may be the most obscure trivia I have learned here. A sincere thank you!

Were they trying to revive the Knights Templar I wonder?. Obviously the colony did not do well.

jdmern, that is super cool. If you ever list that on ebay could you PM me the link. I enjoyed learning something new this morning. My mother always asks "How would you know that" when her and I watch Jeopardy!. I tell her numismatics.

Stop it! All this knowledge is going to make my "OFEC That doesn't exist anymore" set even more impossible! Super cool though

Seriously though, I know of people who are assembling 'One of each German State' sets (much harder than you would think, depending on how far back you go), and a collector assembling a 'One of Each Municipality' Metal Notgeld set (amazingly difficult as they are including Private Issues)!

Okay. this is a templer coins. The first colony was in Haifa around 1885. The country was controled by the Ottoman Empire which by 1860 was very weak and had no coinage. Other coins used during that period were Egyptian coins and French francs. The colonies then spread to Jaffa and Jerusalem and later Sarona, Tel Aviv today and then another near Haifa. This is a great coin and hard to come by. I do have the 5 - 10 - 20 and 40 in my collection. They were in use till early 1900's.
