I liked the eye-appeal of this circulated 1898 South African Penny. It was a minor purchase costing me $7.00, shipping included. It's my first coin from pre-1900 South Africa.

It's a beautiful coin. Very nice that it didn't make you go bankrupt, too!

For what I know about this coin, it's a specific one of the Transvaal region (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek) with a nice portrait of Paul Kruger and his long beard. So it's not of the South Africa as we know it today.

I wouldn't mind having one of those pennies. Less expensive than a Krugerrand !

The following page provide mintage figures for the ZAR coins - http://www.sacoin.co.za/coin_topic5.html

I stopped after I had the penny, tickey (3 pence), 6 pence, shilling 2 shilling, and 2 1/2 shilling coins.

Found my old topic showing coins that I have:

The reverse of the penny has the coat of arms which was on Kruger's wagon.
