quote: I stand by my original statement that the s/h CHARGE is not unreasonable. I never, ever tried to stick up for the way this seller packaged the item. That was unacceptable.
The shipping and handling charge was for a service that was not received ! sure the coin got there ,, but shipped in a regular envelope , with tape on it unprotected ,,and no reasonable return policy ,, this seller should be ashamed . Never seen a better candidate for a negative !

The shipping charge is slightly high for one coin packaged properly. It's not just putting the coin in a 2x2. It also should have been mailed in a bubble mailer, not a regular envelope. We just lowered our shipping from $3 to $2.50 because we found that we could still ship multiple coins in a bubble mailer with brand new materials for under $2.50. Given his service, the shipping and handling charges are way too high. Both areas of the rating should be affected - the s/h charges and item as described. Both areas are affected. An overall neutral or negative feedback is warranted also. Sorry, but if this seller deals in coins, he/she should know better what they are doing. It is the seller's responsibility to learn about the items he/she is selling prior to offering it. That is the last comment I will make in this thread as I don't want to see this discussion turn ugly. Nds76, I hope these comments have helped you.

Susan, the comments have helped a great deal. I am really dissapointed in this transaction. It's amazing the sellers feedback is %100. I have received many coins by letter post but this was the worst experience I have had. Maybe a negative would be a wake up call to him.

As far as the 3$ shipping charge, I sell things on ebay, and I charge 1.75 for the states and $2 for internationals. I make a little money, but you gotta figure I do buy the envelops and mailers. No one has complained about shipping charges yet, but I see people listing shipping charges for first-class shipping for 5-6$ for a coin that could be mailed for $0.58.

Oh but I also do agree that the coin was shipping improperly. I always use flips and then tape it securely in place.

Yesterday I did leave a negative feedback. It is too bad the seller is on vacation for a couple of weeks. Would have liked to resolve the situation ASAP but that wasn't possible because he is away.

Personally, when sellers offer free shipping, I am willing to spend more on my bid. I'd guess the rise in my bid price makes up for the difference in shipping costs. One of my favorite sellers of banknotes charges 50c for shipping, no matter how many items are won. I buy a lot more from this buyer than I would with one of these $2 for the first item, 50c for each additional item. How can you justify raising the shipping costs at all when all that is done is add a second item to the same package for the same postage. I try to steer clear of any sellers who have outrageous shipping costs. If I could buy a coin I think is worth $6 for $1 with $5 shipping, I wouldn't touch it. If the same coin were $7 or even $8 with free shipping I might (that's called psychological accounting).

Yes Jay, people do bid more with lower shipping charges. I do charge an initial 1.75 yes, but after that, I might add 2-3 coins for another $0.25. Usually shipping charges don't go over 2.00 for my customers.

That is terrible. I had someone mail me something like that once. I wasnt too harsh on the lady because I think she was selling her late husbands coins but I brought it to her attention so that other buyers wouldnt give her grief. She seemed to appreciate that I handled it diplomatically despite my disappointment with the way she packaged it.

The few coins I have sold, I have the coin in 2x2 cardboard flip and then pack that between two pieces of cardboard that are slightly bigger than the flip. I then tape the two outer cardboard pieces together and mail in a bubble padded mailer. The extra steps are what keep the buyers happy and make for repeat customers.

I have to relay a recent experience of mine regarding how a package was shipped. If for no other reason than to warn you all about this seller. I recently won an auction for a 1963 silver 250 francs from Luxembourg ebay item number 350025235292Seller has a good rating, 98.7% and no negatives regarding packaging. The postage cost was expensive at $9.60, but I took it into account when bidding and so was ok with it. especially since they were charging the same cost to buyers in the US, albeit sending the package via a different delivery method. (I have to add at this point I do get frustrated when sellers charge exorbitantly more to ship overseas than they do to ship within their own country, if the actual cost of shipping is not much more. It puts a bidder at a disadvantage for winning the auction if one is taking shipping into account when bidding.) When the coin arrived I was quite disgusted. I picked the envelope off my door mat and the coin fell out of the corner of the package! Luckily landing back on the mat and not on the tiled floor. When I looked at the envelope the coin had made holes in two of the corners where it had been freely moving about in the envelope in transit. How it ever made it to my house I will never know. If I had been living in any country with a slightly less than honest post service it never would have. Here is the envelope. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...nvelope1.jpghttp://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...nvelope2.jpgInside the envelope was a sheet of paper folded in thirds with the coin loose, without any type of holder or additional wrapping and in no way secured so that it could not move around. If you look closely at the back of the envelope you can see black rings where it had passed through automated postage machines and the coin had made a sort of "brass rubbing" of itself on the envelope. Now look at the postage stamp. Yes, they had paid 80 cents in postage. Like I said I took the $9.60 into account when bidding and had the coin been packaged well I would not complain but to charge 12 times the cost of postage and not spend at least a little of the extra I paid on a bubble wrap envelope is outrageous. To top it off the seller has a statement in bold within their listing that states, and I quote: "WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR COINS BEING SHIPPED OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES ONCE SHIPPED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING" I am sorry but surely you have to take some responsibility when you do such a bad job of packaging. If I had received an empty envelope, which I so nearly did, they could easily refer to the listing and state that I had been warned. I have not left feedback yet as they have not yet left feedback for me and I fear retaliation, but I do feel I should warn other buyers about the packaging. The seller is woziescorner, they sell mostly jewellery, but also coins. Surely they don't package their jewellery this badly when sending overseas? Any thoughts? ***Edited by Forum Dad to remove addresses from image***

I agree that's inexcusable. Don't think they'd ship a ring like that. A few points though.... quote: Seller has a good rating, 98.7% and no negatives regarding packaging.
98.7% right now is bad and it would take a lot for me to buy from them. Now around July or so, if the new feedback rules apply, 98.7% will probably be cream of the crop since ebay will slapping duct tape on all the sellers' mouths. quote: (I have to add at this point I do get frustrated when sellers charge exorbitantly more to ship overseas than they do to ship within their own country, if the actual cost of shipping is not much more. If you paid with Paypal, it's costing you $25 for me to ship it to you. Non-negotiable... Paypal makes me provide on-line DC to be covered which is only provided with Express Mail. I refuse to let Paypal let buyers scam me.

First of all, Leebreeze, I took the liberty of "breaking" the image of the front of the envelope. Both your address and that of the seller are visible, and that's a fundamental breach of Internet security which is not recommended under any circumstances. I strongly advise that you blur the address details before posting such images. On to the topic at hand. For a seller with over 3,000 Feedbacks, 98.7% Positive is very poor. I would peruse the offerings of a seller with such low Feedback very cautiously. With the changes in ebay's Feedback system, a number like that will become more acceptable within a year or so, but for right now any seller whose Feedback reaches 4 digits had better be well over 99% Positive to be considered "good." You're in a tough spot. Assuming the coin is undamaged, in your shoes I would leave a Neutral specifying the very poor packaging as the reason. Retaliatory Feedback would likely result, but it would affect you very little as a buyer and you'd have the ability to post a response to it.

I don't think coins should be sent in envelopes. There is NO protection. That was highway robbery how your coin was shipped leebreeze. I don't think any reputable dealer would send a coin in that manor. I think its so wrong to charge $9.60 when they only used an 80 cent stamp. I would definately leave a negative feedback. A similar situation happened to me and I left a negative feedback. Thus far there hasn't been any retaliation since the seller is on vacation. For the price you paid you should have got overnight delivery!
