Hi folks,
I am recently retired and have decided to take up Numismatics as a hobby. I am slowly educating myself through sites such as this since there are no clubs nearby. My interests are mainly Canadian coins but also stray into Tokens, US and the occasional curiosity from Europe.

My first question for discussion is: Since Canada stopped making our one cent coin in 2012 and has since been withdrawing billions of cent coins from circulation; what are the chances that there will be an increase in value for recent coins in collectors' possession in the near future? If so, which year cent is most likely to appreciate for my grandkids?

Bob, Welcome to the family. I don't think that the modern coins will increase much more than a few pennies. I think your great great grandkids may see a few nickels of increase.

I still am able to get boxes of pennies from banks I roll search from, so it will be another decade or so before we see much demise of availability.

I would suggest to complete some full sets, including the magnetic/non magnetic versions and set them aside for your decedents.

in response to your question about pennies being removed from circulation affecting market demand and prices...

Items that appreciate are usually varieties that are found (a number in the date that has been punched twice or other random features), or low Mintage dates (where many fewer coins were produced relative to neighbouring years).

Take for example the last year 2012 pennies
Everybody who was into collecting coins or not perceived that it might be worth something in the future and probably set aside a bunch of them.
Not to mention that the mint sold the last 20,000 rolls with serial numbers printed on them. - if I remember correctly the first and last of those 20,000 rolls of pennies sold for $5000-20000 .... 50cents in face value for a roll.

It's always a toss up and hard to predict the future of what will appreciate

Also if you want a higher number of responses on this point, try posting in the Canadian thread under the General section :)

Welcome. I don't know much about if the value will change much, but still worth a penny to keep in my mind.
