Hello Everyone,
I am just starting in coin collecting and have a limited budget. I really do not know where to begin. I am not really thinking about trying to sell for a profit, I just want to put together a nice collection and pass it on to my daughter, she is 12. I just see so much that I like, I have found some painted coins, from Canada and Australia that are beautiful but I do not know much about them. I know I want to start collecting Silver Eagles and maybe some gold coins when my finances improve. I really like the old US coinage, especially the obsolete coinage, and proofs. Any advice would be appreciated. Also does anyone have any idea of the best places to shop? There is not much in my area Thanks
Ron

Buy the nicest you can afford instead of a lot of stuff. In the long run you will be happier.

Welcome Ron. It's always hard to know where to start since there's so much out there. It would be nice if you and your daughter could do this together. Start with a type of coin that might have significance for you and her, something from your family past or part of SC history (CWTs - Civil war tokens are interesting). As BStrauss said, get the best you can afford. Avoid junk - there's a lot of that out there too. IMO that would include painted coins, but it's most important to collect what you like. There are many beautiful coins from many countries... your LCS, Low Country Coins in Florence, probably has displays of many coin types and may be able to steer you into something you'll find interesting.

Hello, jbuck, I am in the Pee Dee NoPoMoCo I wish I could do that but Hailie lives in WV. with my ex. she is 12. When I mentioned the painted coins I was thinking of the ones with animals on them. She loves animals. The ones I have seen are from the Canadian and Australian Mint. For myself, I am most interested in the very old coinage of the US, but as you know some of them are way out of my price range. I agree with Bstrauss3 I have seen several coins on ebay that look terrible. Do you think it is best to buy coins that have already been graded or get the raw ones and have them graded? Thank again everyone.

The journey is different for each of us; just take your time, and as you hang-around you'll pick-up plenty of knowledge, I'm sure.

Thank you, you are indeed correct. I keep wanting to bounce around, but I know I cannot collect everything. I have gotten a few coins, and look at my change to try and put some of the newer sets together. I want to specialize in something, but I am still looking at this point.

Welcome Ron. :O)

As a fellow newbie (in NC), I can tell you that I have already learned a lot on this forum. The members are exceptionally helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable.

I like the idea of involving your daughter in the hobby. Even if coins don't seem exciting to her at first blush, just doing something together with Daddy is something all girls love IMHO. (I have two daughters.)

Plus, in a couple of years she'll enter the "parents don't know anything stage", which is of course just part of the separation and individuation process, but it can make it a little more challenging to share a hobby that isn't 'cool' amongst her peers. (There are exceptions to this rule of course.)

And if she's really not interested at all, collect for yourself! Go with your gut, what you think is really cool, what attracts your attention.

Glad to have you join the forum.

All the Best,

Mark
