Hello U.S. NCLT collectors. On a whim I dropped into a local "we buy your gold and silver" joint to see if he was also selling silver. The first thing he showed me was a token I had no way of identifying, so I specified that I was more interested in US Mint or Canadian Mint silver. The next item he showed me was this (pictures below). I've identified it as a 2013 ASE. I assumed I was purchasing a bullion coin (I haven't had a silver dollar in my hands for 30 years, and am very new to numismatics) but from what I see here: http://www.coincommunity.com/us_silver_eagles/ I gather that the bullion coins lack the Westpoint stamp. So, next question... although I assume it's not a proof set, how might I (as an amateur) know for sure if it's a burnished coin or proof coin? Thanks for your input! (Oh, and for the record, I got it for $30 Canadian.)

That is a proof SAE. The burnished finish coins(Uncirculated in Mint parlance) carry the W mintmark but do not have polished fields.

Definitely a 2013 ASE Proof. I take it this didn't come with its box and COA? Both Burnished and Proofs come in their own boxes with COAs from the mint.

It's a fake 2013-W silver proof.
A terrible fake at that. Note the flat appearance, foot placement, eagle off-center, etc.

was just coming back to take another look and I agree something looks way off to me. I think it is a fake as well.

Plenty of these fake silver Eagle proofs have hit the market recently, coming from China. I've seen examples offered in full Mint packaging as well, down to the CoA. Another test is to weigh it, as I believe these fakes come in underweight. Dates up to 2015 have been reported and I wouldn't doubt 2016 ones are now available. For more info, here's an article on the same style of fake proof silver Eagle (this one 2015) reported by F. Michael Fazzari: http://www.numismaticnews.net/artic...les-reported

The reverse font just screams fake...and the lettering is too far from the rim

This one is a very commonly encountered fake. I would try to get your money back if you can.

Update: so I took it back and managed to get my money refunded, but the guy's business practices certainly don't inspire me. What are the forum rules on outing fly-by-night dealers?

Glad you got your money back. Was it even silver? Did you happen to try the magnet test?

I don't have a super strong magnet myself, but it did seem like one of the many things he checked before begrudgingly refunding my money.

..The reverse "U" in United is from 2007..
..the dash between "Silver" and "One" should be a squiggle
..check out the dots at 3 and 9 o'clock...way too fat
