Got this the other day. I thought it looked better in the pictures so I am disappointed. What do you think the grade is of this coin?

Typical weak hair decent middle reverse strike I say anywhere from au58-ms63...21 Peace dollars are extremely difficult to grade.

I'm thinking AU55 or 58.

I thought the coin would have more luster and I also thought the strike on the observe was better. In hand, the observe looks kind of dull IMO. It does have luster but not the typical cartwheel luster I'm used to on a MS coin. It graded MS-62 from PCGS so I expected better. On the other hand, the reverse does looks above average to me. Maybe this was a coin that was dipped (but if it was, why didn't it grade details?). I paid $280 shipped for it, however the seller used expensive shipping so I'd be out about $20 by the time I shipped it back if I returned it. This was a big purchase so I am disappointed I don't love the coin. I hope I didn't get ripped off too bad price wise as well.

For reference, here are the sellers pictures. They must have had the light hitting the coin just right. I think the actual in hand coin is somewhere in the middle of the sellers pictures and the ones I posted in the OP. I'm horrible at taking pictures so it's not quite as dull as it looks in my first post.

Just because a coin has been dipped does not mean it will grade details. Some of the MS 21's have a grayish cast look and not full luster. When the coin was minted, the mint had problems with high relief pressure wearing out the dies. The mint turned down the pressure. The end result was poor strikes on center and some coins with grayish cast. To find a mint state 21 with a solid strike, full luster and strong for the grade takes a lot of hunting.

Thanks slider, you originally pointed out the strikes on 1921 Peace dollars to me. Do you (or anyone else) happen to have a link to a guide showing all the areas to look when determining strike on these? I do have one 1921 with pretty decent observe strike but it's in an ANACS holder graded MS62. I know there are other areas to look at besides the hair over the ear.

I do not have a link. The other trouble spot do to strike is on the reverse in the high spots of the eagle feathers. Pull up an example of a Proof 21 and you can see what a full high relief strike looks like. You should be able to find one on the Heritage site. There were about 10 Matt proofs struck.

LibertyEagle21: Don't hang your head over this purchase. If you don't like the coin you can return it for a full refund including shipping. You should pick up the return shipping cost though and, with Signature Confirmation, that can be done for under $6.

That said the $280 price paid for a 1921 Peace in PCGS MS62 is a good price. Secondly I'll stop short of calling the seller's pics "juiced" but they are close and if they don't accurately represent the coin in-hand then you have every right to a refund if desired.

Without getting long winded here let's finish by saying $280 is a lot of money to anybody. Don't concern yourself with the seller's shipping costs or anything other than satisfaction with this purchase. Buy the book before you buy the coin. You'll be glad you did: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bowers-Seri...AOSw2x1XJ6Ve

None of these photos are good enough to get a grade from. The coin appears to be between AU-58 and MS-63.
