Did PCGS drop the ball on this one or is the seller misleading people in to believing it's an error. The slab says "genuine" no mention of an error. If I'm not mistaking & correct me if I'm wrong but blank on one side of this nature is not a possible. http://www.ebay.com/itm/37167864529...RK:MEBIDX:IT

I wouldn't touch this thing with a 20-foot pole. Awful pictures.

I think PCGS is saying it is a real 1971D coin... ungradeable because of the reverse. Not an error/variety coin from what I am seeing. The seller is calling it an error, not PCGS

not an error. PCGS is saying the coin itself is a geniune coin. But not an error as lawest said.

The PCGS website has no photo, but they list this as "Genuine (98 - Damage)".
To me, it is obvious the reverse was put on a lathe and turned (shaved) off. You can see the raised area, and a dent in Jefferson's cheek.

I think there are some things they should refuse to slab because slabbing them leads to erroneous assumptions.

Yikes... "Damaged" doesn't equal "Error"

Fred Weinberg confirms error coins for PCGS (or he used to when I was in contact with him), and he is the one to ask if this is as described in the listing..
I do know that had I had this coin raw and submitted it to ANACS, I would receive it back the same way it was sent..

Taking a 2nd look, it could have been struck without a reverse die, and as much as I like errors, I wouldn't pay a small fraction of what he's asking..

Quote: it could have been struck without a reverse die If that was the case I would expect the obverse to have a very weak strike. The obverse shows a pretty good strike.IMHO

It is post strike damage. Barely worth a nickel. It is a damaged coin.
