Hi,

I've gone through my dad's collection. I am trying to figure out the best way to store the coins. My dad used to use the Whitman storage books. My problem is that the books only allow one coin per year in the album. Sometimes I have a couple of coins for that year and won't know where to keep the others. Currently I have all the coins in a tiny envelope marked with the dates and how many.

Advice appreciated.

Thanks,
Peaches

The best way to store coins depends completely on what and how you want to collect. I guess your dad wanted a type set or some specific pre-defined set by Whitman.

If you feel that you want to store more coins of a kind in a safe way, then you can always start a generic album and fill it with 2x2 flips. Then you can just build the collection you like in the quantities you like. I personally collect things for which no pre-defined albums like a Whitman or Dansco exist, and I am pretty happy with the solution. Those flips also provide quite decent protection for your coins. I don't know exactly who the biggest providers in the US are, but here in Europe we use Importa (ceased to exist by now), Hartberger, Leuchtturm and Optima. I guess there's also many companies alike in the US.

A lot of people store coins in this tiny envelopes. Sometimes it can cause some toning (desirable to some collectors depending on coin type). Most importantly, the environment you store the coins in is important. Stable temperatures with low humidity is best. Personally, I store my coins in cardboard 2x2s. These are then stored in boxes. Then they are placed in a dry climate controlled environment like a safe deposit box.
Rest in Peace

To control the effect of the environment. Store everything in Zip lock type bags.

If your planning on becoming a coin collector, I suggest looking for better methods of storing coins. For example if some of your coins are in older, blue Whitman brand Folders or boards, I suggest taking those coins out of them. Then look into spending a bit of money to buy what is called an Album. You can find a large assortment of those via the internet or a local coin or hobby store. Try a web site called Wizard coin supply for example.

@just carl -

Is there a reason you suggest not using the older blue Whitman albums? Or is it just the folders you are suggesting to move from? I have a nickel collection and part of my #3 Lincoln collection in blue albums and I actually like those older Whitman albums pretty well but not if they are bad for the coins in them.
