This is my "collection" thus far of
Buffalo nickels I have found over years with (to me) unexplainable marks, almost always on the lips. I theorize that there must have been some sort of ejection device that caused the marks. I truly do not know. I have not seen any others in people's collections, but I always held them when I found them. The only one that seems to be a true mint error is the first one, a 1936-P with some lip marks, but especially on the nose, and with somewhat corresponding marks on the reverse. These are on the Buffalo's rump, under Unum. I will post just the closeup pictures, though I have obverse and reverse pictures of each. If I posted all of them there would be 30 pictures. Enjoy.
** I have added 4 photos of the reverse of number 1 for you to consider. There are several reasons I do not think this post mint damage. The major reason is that this "damage" consistently happens to the mouth area - no where else. This alone leads me to think that there is something that happened at the mint. Another reason is that there are no other marks, for instance a gripping tool will leave corresponding marks on the edges or the reverse. Traumatic marks left by hammers chisels, etc., will leave disturbance marks to the reverse. Nothing like this is evident. The four new pics show similar marks on the reverse of number one .Bill.
