I purchased this in a "basement slab" grading it as MS66, which is, of course, so much nonsense. Still, the price was right for a specimen with what appears to be a lot of original luster and no hairlines. The obvious die crack on the cap side is almost unremarkable for this type. Overall, nicer than what's normally to be had, and at just 768K struck, not quite as common an issue as some others of this year. What betrays some circulaion to me is the slight flattening of the claw grasping the snake on the eagle side. So I'd call it AU. Anybody disagree?

The grade based on circulation is likely AU - no problem with that. I am bothered by the dark stains and wonder if the coin was conserved to possibly remove PVC corrosion or some other form of accretion. That could make the coin technically ungradable.

Usually the edge (if visible) can be used to determine if the coin was conserved. Typically the edge is not treated or is treated very poorly. Since I suspect you will remove the coin from the questionable slab, I would advise you to review the edge very closely for evidence of the type of "material" removed.

It was already cracked out of the slab for the previously posted photos.

The dark blotches do seem to be a deposit of some sort of contaminant rather than your classic toning/tarnish.

The edges are weakly rendered, but only in a couple spots exhibit what may be same foreign material.

The edge looks quite worn to be on the edge of that coin. Odd.

In hand, I wasn't taking the edges to be as so much worn as just inadequately impressed (poosibly with worn equipment), but I can see how it might be interpreted either way. I may never be able to account for all this specimen's peculiarities.

High AU detail, close to UNC... but that's one big ol' ugly blotch that does NOT look like it's going to dip off easily. Monday morning QB - the date/mint is not scarce enough to be worth the aggravation, I'd say.

AU- for me, AU 55. The eagle's beak and the snake are worn nearly together, the foot grasping the snake is flattened, and the right wing and knee are worn. Wouldn't take much more wear to make XF and the eye appeal is not good. It needs restored, if possible.

Still, a nice coin if the price was right.
