Severe dishonesty with photos on the part of the seller forced my hand with this one. I love original coins, but sometimes, it's too risky to the coin to leave it be. The coin was entirely black, almost, with a mottled obverse, and a reverse that appeared (and smelled) as though it had been buried in axle grease for a few years, including a huge, greasy, tar-like fingerprint over the left wing (which you can barely see in seller's pictures.) It would have never straight graded at any
TPG.
Since I already have the same date and MM in a slabbed MS63 I figured I'd try to save it rather than waste time returning it, so first she went into the acetone, then a 1:3 dip/water in 5 second intervals using pillow edge tongs, scalding hot water rinse, then acetone again. Took 3 5 second attempts, plus some light picking at the tar-goop-junk with a paper lollipop stick, and most of the ugly tar-black went away. There was actually some coppery red toning that had been hidden under the black junk that survived intact.
That being said, I think I saved it from impending doom, and if you want to re-evaluate the grade, go ahead.
