I know sometimes some coins make it into TPG holders, and we all wonder why and how.
From what I have seen of U.S numismatics, this is known and I guess is part of the game. Nobody is perfect, as they say. I accept that.

Even so, this one really had me scratching my head when I saw it. Recently sold in ebay and TPG cleanly graded VG8. The scratches on the reverse are quite severe, in my opinion. Certainly not adjustment marks.
Would this mean that my example of a similar coin (1803 1/2 dime) would grade problem- free? not according to my standards.

Neither of these coins should grade problem-free. The 1800 has better surfaces with a more original patina but those nasty scratches should be a deal-breaker. That coin looks to have at least Fine-12 detail so apparently the TPG did some net-grading. That would be OK for minor problems but is inappropriate in this case.

Your 1803 has a different set of problems (cleaned, damaged, ex-jewelry?) but likewise is a details coin for any reasonable grader.

Which TPG?
That would go a long way in influencing my opinion.

Jaobler, thanks for your comments.
My feelings too. This coin should not be in a TPG holder.

My coin is definitely a 'problem' coin, too.

Kanga, this coin was sold in a PCGS OGH holder, graded VG8.

Any chance it is a counterfeit PCGS slab?

It should be in a genuine holder and not graded problem-free. It looks VF20 to me so the "silent" net grade was quite harsh for the scratches.

I know the TPGs often give scarce/rare coins a break, but this seems plain wrong, I agree. In any event, I don't think the holder is going to make any difference to the next buyer!

a little leniency for minor marks/scratches on early coinage is acceptable to me but this is a blatant example of inconsistent service and a blow to those get their coins back labeled scratched for lesser scratches

I am with those who lead to the idea that the slab needs further investigation.

Perhaps a breakout and re grading would be a good idea.

I've never seen or heard of a fake PCGS OGH except for the fake first generation rattler slabs.

At issue here, in my opinion, is the practice of 'silent net grading'.

This appears to be a practice which can, if not careful, be taken ad-absurdum and result in situations like this.

Where do you draw the line? this is a case of it being taken too far.

I went to the original listing and scanned the bar code. Seems legit unless someone went to the trouble of faking a label that matches what is in their database. It is a pretty old holder though.
