I-Wouldn't-Want-One-Of-These-Dimes-In-My-Pocket!

OUCH!

(This was actually sold at a Heritage Auction in January for over $42,000.)

Does anyone know the story behind these? I assume that these were done at the mint, but not by accident.

Is this where the Chinese got the idea of mass-producing such things?
Or was it actually a Chinese product that made it's way into a proper auction?

Looks like a mint worker had a bit of fun...

Here is the CCF reference:

I am appalled that Heritage would auction this. Did someone pay $42,000 because Heritage gave what amounts to a seal of approval?

I would think whoever made that should have put the Roosevelt Head at the Head of the nail.

Yes DL20K. Once this sold for $42k about a month after we started seeing ebay flooded with Chinese cointetfits. The Chinese are fast with the trends that's for sure

Thanks for pointing that out Cascade, I've always wondered where they got that idea from.

No, Heritage was able to sell it for that because PCGS gave it THEIR seal of approval. Old timers knew about these things back in the 70's. We considered them junk then, and they are still junk. Just $42,000 junk.

And yes it was the sale of that coin that got the Chinese counterfeiters to start mass producing them.
