Hey guys, I got a detector from my mom last year - Its something I've always wanted to do since I was a little kid. I didn't do much last summer - just a handful of pennies and the like.

I'm actually living in Milwaukee now so I was thinking about hitting up the beaches. Is that worth my while? Going to the beaches and doing stuff?

Anyways, the coolest thing I found was a really old stove door. Found it in my friends backyard, took a lot of digging, as it was about 10 inches long. Yeah, a stove door like from a really old wood stove. It was kind of neat because the only reason for it being buried there was there is a railroad running through his backyard - maybe someone left it there while building the railroad?

I have an ACE 250, and it works well to my liking.

Anyways, I cant wait to get out there! I'm quite limited in Wisconsin, as everything is currently under several inches of ice and snow.

Hi HippieOutcast

The beaches can be good ,it depends on the use they get ,,if they are beaches used in the summer for swimming and sunbathing basically the normal beach activities then odds are good you will find some good stuff !

I have heard of people doing quite well at schools and parks...basically places where there are alot of kids running around whose change might fall out. You probably wont find anything of numismatic value, but it's not unheard of to find quite a few dollars worth of change. Good luck!

I'm not really in it for the rare coins - I really like hunting for even a common penny.

Do I need to check with the city for searching in parks and playgrounds?

I would check with the parks dept. to see if you need a permit. Here in Ohio where I live the city is ok. The Metro Parks don't allow and the State you need a permit. If the playground areas of parks and schools don't produce, try finding older homes to ask permission. The parks and schools in the seedy parts of town will produce but only go there like 6:00am-9:00am. You will need the 4" coil for trshy areas. Run in the coin mode until you get used to it. Never mind the all metal mode recommended by the factory until you are used to your machine.

Beaches can be very productive. One thing you should do is when you get to the beach in question look for long rows with tractor tracks in the sand going the length of the beach. If you see these its a good bet the beach cleaner has been through and the chance of you making some good finds has just gone down. I try to get to a beach just after a holiday or a busy weekend VERY early in the morning before the cleaner goes through. I also agree that you should check to see if it is ok to hunt these beaches. Some of our state parks here in Michigan are off limits to hunting, some are modified, and only about five are totally open to hunting where you want. Schools have been pretty good to me in the past. Kids today seem to have quite a bit of change in their pockets, and I do pretty well in the chips or sand.
