I've also posted this coin in the Metal Detecting forum, but thought I'd put up the photos here as well.

I dug up this 1853 Seated Liberty half dime this morning along a dirt path by a river in a small town about 30 miles from where I live.

It's my first Seated Liberty coin. It has some knocks on it, but the details are pretty nice. I'd love to know who lost it some 150 years ago.

It's my best U.S. coin find beating out the 1873 Indian Head cent I found earlier this year.

Three years ago I found a high grade Norwegian 1810 Norwegian 2 Skilling in a local park. Not sure how that got there.

I did get to go detecting in the UK back in 2010 and found an VRBS ROMA bronze dating to around 330 AD. You won't find any of those in eastern Wisconsin.

Nice! The best I found coin wise so far is a 1907 Barber dime, and the oldest a 1901 IHC. That is really nice for a coin that's been in the ground so long. Was it that clean when you dug it or did you have it need a lot of cleaning?

It is hard to find much earlier than early 1900s in California where I live unless you are intentionally seeking out historic spots. How I wish I had gotten into metal detecting during the 5 years I lived in Boston!

The coin only had a bit of dirt on it when I dug it up. I just rinsed it off; didn't even need to use a nylon brush on it. That's how silver usually comes out of the ground around here . . . not that I find much silver.

This was silver coin #6 for the year. I've also found three silver rings.

Nice coin.

Even better that you found it.

A lot of diggers miss those small coins.

Congrats ....

Thinking about it more, it does make sense it was pretty clean. Most of my park dug silver looked good. I do a lot of beach hunting and any silver I find there is pretty much black, so I was thinking of that at first.
