Hello! I could really use some advice on this coin I found yesterday in my grandpa's attic. I've read up on the Cheerio penny a bit and the census is to keep it in the plastic "container" it is in cause once you take it out you can no longer get it graded and tagged with the "Cherrio" penny title. That being said, I belive I found one with a die crack on his back below Liberty. If my intentions were to sell this coin, should I just list it as a Cherrio penny still in package with a die break error? Or would it be worth the money to send it off to be graded? Will they also Lable the error as well as the Cheerio name?....Is this coin even worth the hassle? Is it common? Sorry for all the questions, new to coins and especially what to do with them o ce I have them. Thank you in advance for any info!

Very nice discovery - we'll need to wait for the experts to chime in. As far as what I have seen on ebay if they slab -I have seen some Labeled Cheerio on it. The Wide AM variety seem to be pretty common so not really much added value there.

Don't know that answer but hang in there for the others.

Don't take it out of the packaging.

It's a collectible in its own right so leave it as is. If the "errors" are significant, then they add to the interest in the Cheerio item. Not worth the expense of slabbing IMO.

Looks like a gas bubble to me not a die crack. Is it a WAM? Not worth slabbing,IMHO.Common?-check ebay sold for current value.

If they are less than $100, I wouldn't waste the money to have it slabbed. The card mentions it is one of 10,000,000. Hardly a low population? I agree with a plating bubble. Looks like an issue also with a Struck Through Grease on the motto. The color isn't even. So if it has sentimental value, keep it. If not, list it. You have to decide.

Thank you all for the info. I'll take a better pic in awhile but I'm pretty sure it's no gas bubble. The plastic prevents a clear pic but it's a solid crack on his back with it trailing away towards the edge of the coin. But I take it even if it was a die crack it would not raise the value?
Rest in Peace

I just looked at ebay sold listings for Cheerios cents and they sell just fine in their original package. The only reason to get one slabbed is if you think it would get a really high grade. Yours won't because of the gas bubble.

I think you should just keep it as it is because it belonged to your grandfather.

There's no way of knowing how many of the 10 Mil. are still in their original package but they don't seem scarce.

Even if it was a die crack it would not add value,in fact I think it would take away value to someone who wants a cheerio cent for their collection.
