This 1900 Lafayette Dollar sold for $240 on ebay last night. It looks like it's a lightly circulated coin, but I don't know what to make of the toning.

Is it original or was something done to the coin?

The lighting in the photos is far from the best.

What do folks think about it? Thanks for sharing your opinions.

I'm not a fan of toning.

Most likely cleaned and retoned, there also appears to be numerous hairlines in the upper right quadrant of the reverse.

From the images presented, the coin does not appear to have "natural" surfaces or coloring. The obverse appears to have received a harsh cleaning at some point in its past that has left its surface impaired and the reverse coloring does not appear natural.

As previously noted, the reverse shows very clear hairlines that I would guess resulted from the coin's past cleaning.

Possible to get photos of the coin from the same angle? It would be interesting to see if the faces look similar in the same exposure.

The photos are the seller's.

Plenty of good photos there. Enough for someone to decide they wanted to drop $240.

Something has been done to the coin. The bright colors on the reverse look very unnatural. The obverse looks like artificial toning gone wrong. Sorry, but I don't care for this coin.

Same here. Hard to understand the appeal.
