Hello,

I noticed a nice MS-66 1948 25 cent piece on ebay...
Anyone have an idea how much is a fair price for this coin?
Thanks!

I think that one on ebay is overpriced.

Coinsandcanada list it at $970.00 with a notation that the value is going down.
Usually their list price is a little higher than actual selling price so I would say around $925.00.
Maybe some of our members who sell coins can give a more informed selling price.

There are more 1948 25 cents graded MS66 or higher by PCGS than any others silver or nickel.
They are as common as dirt and ready to take a huge plunge in pricing.
I wouldn't buy one at this time 'til we see where the price settles.
I could see the MS66 coins heading to $400 or less.

One more tidbit to add, it's an ICCS MS-66, not a PCGS MS-66...I believe there are only 7 ICCS MS-66 1948 Quarters in the population report...$400 seems to low for this coin...
Anyone else have any thoughts on how much I should offer for the coin?
Thanks!

The die burn visually holds it back, IMO. $500-600?

The last one I sold was to a prominent Canadian Dealer in 2013 for 825 CAD plus GST . ICCS 2 letter MS66.

Thanks for all of the great responses so far...I am still learning about the hobby of coin collecting...I noticed what looks like some die burn on the coin and glad to hear someone pointing it out since I didn't think the grader would give a coin a MS-66 grade If the coin showed die burn...
I also wondered if possibly the photo doesn't flatter the coin, possibly it looks better in person? I have had a good dealing in the past with this seller and just want to make sure to offer fair market value, if indeed I do make an offer...
Thanks and would like to hear continued thoughts...

For a number of reasons the finest Canadian coins have a tendency to migrate to PCGS holders.
The fact that there are far more MS66 and MS67 1948 quarters than in any other year pre-2000 should tell you that this is a money coin set for a great fall.
It's supply and demand, in this case the supply far outstrips the demand, wait for an auction to determine the price, right now a BIN or best offer situation is just a come on to entice the unaware to part with a load of cash.

I would also say that's high. The pricing of common year coinage is definitely headed down. A price ratio comparison is a 1966 MS-66 50 cent piece I have. Only one other in the ICCS census and Coins and Canada has it estimated at 790.00 but the selling priced would likely be closer to half that. There are so many quality collections coming on the market right now and likely over the years to come that it will be difficult for the Canadian market to absorb and hold for prices. Key and semi key years are likely fare better.

Have to agree with TheCoinHunter. The overall trend in common Canadian High grade is definitely downwards. It is more than obvious that the MS65 , MS66 Elizabeth craze has been done for awhile. Key date and nice early coins will always have some sort of a market though.
There are many factors , some being a very thinly traded Canadian coin market, fewer new collectors that collect decimal by date coupled with a general malaise in the Canadian economy crippled with high taxes , both retail sales / HST and income taxes.
All is not doom and gloom though. There are collectors of Canadian coins in the US and other countries. Also a lot of really neat stuff will come available in the next five to ten years as old codgers and dealers in my age group die off or pack it in.
The younger collectors and dealers should see that as opportunity.
