This is the Kennedy half from the two coin set of 1998 with Robert and John Kennedy on the obverses. This Kennedy has a special matte finish and the other coin of the set is the Robert Kennedy dollar. You can usually buy the set for 160-180

Ok, so is it from the Special Mint Set? Aren't they usually designated SMS on holders?

Well, it's not really THE Special Mint Set - those were instead of proof sets.

This is a special (specimen) finish, but PCGS calls them SMS too, so ... pay your money, take your chances

Now your talking about some of my favorite modern coins.
Ones I suggest to new collectors ... when I am asked at LCS's.

The 1998 S Silver half dollar ( my avatar) came in a
Robert F Kennedy commemorative two coin set.

Here is mine, notice NGC grades the SPxx. (specimen)

There are three of these coins that came with this finish.
You will hear them called specimen or matte proof.

The first, a Jefferson nickel, came in the Jefferson coin and currency set.

I have read that the mint went with the matte proof for this
nickel so it would match the UNC Jefferson dollar.

Here is my graded 1994 Jefferson .. notice the SPxx grade
mintage 167,703

In 1997 the mint tried this again, with the botanical gardens commemorative set.
It came with a UNC commemorative dollar and matte proof nickel.

I agree with GR58 on this special Matte proof 1998-s JFK. In hand these are stunning. Pics just cannot do them justice. It also is one of my favorite modern coins and I will never regret paying the price for mine. I'd love a roll of them!
