If you could get a close of of the MM that'd be great

Chances are it's post mint damage. There should be no reason for someone to intentionally alter the mintmark of a 1989 cent

I don't know how. if I zoom in on my camera it distorts the picture

Try cropping the photo so that just the coin is in the picture ,, by taking out the background you will have more file size for the coin .

Get the manual out for the camera and see if it has "macro" - then figure out how to use it.

Your coin is corroded around the mintmark.

It is corrosion. It is quite common around the mintmark and other lettering. Often the strike breaks through the copper plating. The exposed zinc core is subject to severe corrosion.
