About 75% of sellers do. This one is just admitting it and letting his bidders know that if they are bothered by that, to not bid.

I see it as a preemptive measure for complaints of shipping charges.

The seller is very up front about all the costs involved with shipping. I think it's great and would buy from them if they had something I was looking for.

Most sellers make some profit on shipping and personally as a buyer and seller I dont have a problem with it as long as the shipping costs are disclosed up front. I have a pretty good idea of what something should cost to ship and if I think it's way off I wont bid, simple enough. I feel that this seller is being 100% honest and upfront and makes a good point when he says to consider the final bid plus disclosed shipping cost as a total cost of the transaction.

If the seller knows he is making money off shipping, should he not readjust the rates? If not, wouldn't that be fee avoidance?

I guess techinically it could be considered that, but I doubt ebay is going to care if someone is making a buck or two on shipping on an item. It's when they are selling expensive items for let's say $1, but charging $200 for shipping that it becomes obvious that they are doing it to avoid fees. I guess I dont know where ebay draws the line, but personally I dont have a problem with someone making a couple of bucks on shipping as long as they deliver the item as promised.

Where I have the problem of people making money off of shipping is when they cut major corners on packing.

Agreed insideout! I have often paid like $3.50 shipping only to have it mailed in a regular envelope and stamp with no 2x2!

Let's talk about shipping and handling assuming it's shipped properly...

 .79 Bubble mailer ($19.95 for a 25 pack at Staples)
 .09 Inkjet Mailing Labels ($21.48 for a 250 pack at Staples)
1.48   Postage
1.20 5 min to pack @ $15/hr (I don't work for free and big sellers pay people to do it)
====
3.56 Total > This does not even touch on paper, ink, gas, electric, or anything else.

At $3.89, this seller is not so honest, in fact he's technically lying, even though it's due to ignorance. He's not making a profit on shipping, he's taking a loss. Susan and I take a loss on every single shipment, but some people still think we're too high.

Well detailed and that doesn't even factor in time and gas money to take the package to the post office to mail it. It takes me about 20 minutes all-told to get to the post office, park, use the automated mailing system and then come back home so there are measurable costs associated with this.

As a seller, I am surprised by the ignorance of people who have me at 4.5 or 4.6 for shipping costs. I am fine (4.8 or 4.9) for the other 3 DSR categories, but I only have a 25 cent or 50 cent handling charge built on top of the actual shipping. So their beef with shipping costs should lie with the post office. People want their items quickly but then get upset over the Priority Mail shipping charges that I have no control over (unless I decide to take a loss on it).
