Wow Earl, that is really cool looking. I have no idea though. Both sides appear to be raised areas though. It will be fun to see what happens here with your post. My only thought would be maybe a Die Clash?

The area on the head is incuse.(or however you spell It). Just does't look like to me like the average hit. Looks to clean on the front and the spidering on the reverse seems a little strange.

Maybe it got stuck under something really heavy then that caused the impression.

Here in south east Texas, we might call this the Redneck Rockwell hardness test, blunt force trama or PSD. The reverse spiders webs (cracking) formed from the downward force applied to the obverse creating split plating at the site opposite. Thanks, Doug.

Wow. Two lessons on one thread: Incuse or Struck through errors: How to tell the the differences? Light direction on incuse and raised devices. How to tell from an image?

This is interesting.
@Coop: Is it possible to have a coin that is struck through something so big that it "Clashes" through the opposite side?
This was my original thought on this coin until I read your lesson sheets.

That what I was thinking (hoping) too. Hoping maybe the die shattered but the more I looked at the more I realized it was as Halo1st explained it.

If there is something in the chamber, it would be pulverized or forced into the planchet. Both sides would be normal thickness, but it may fall off later leaving a crater.
