I've been hunting for a $2 Toonie Proof (Silver/Gilt) version for the last year and have not seen any for sale. Does this coin exist? Charlton lists this coin with a "quantity sold" and "issue price" of N/A and they have value prices not much higher than the nickel/bronze proofs. With the value prices not much different than the nickel/bronze proofs, I would assume the quantity would be somewhat similar as well. But they seem to be elusive. At any point in time ebay sellers will list any number of the nickel/bronze proofs which seem to be readily available. I once purchased a 1996 $2 proof that was listed as silver but what I received was the nickel/bronze version.

Thanks nss_52 for the link. I guess I should have done a better search. Based on what I read in the link, I'm going to assume for now that this coin does not exist. Still hoping someone can prove me wrong.

They do indeed exist. As others have said, they were issued in a special set. I have one of them (coin only) in my ebay store right now. On sale until Sunday. They are neat, fat little coins!

Pokermandude - I'm familiar with the coin you describe but it's not the one I was looking for. I'm was inquiring on the normal thickness 1996 silver proof. Charlton lists it along with the nickel/bronze proof, the thick silver piedfort proof (the one you have for sale), and the gold proof. But based on the comments I've read in this forum, the normal thickness silver proof does not seem to exist.

@ tnt I've searched for it as well. Charlton lists such a detailed description of this mystery silver with gold plated centre toonie - in a black suede (as opposed to black leather) case. Altogether four different types - the gold, the nickel/bronze, the silver? and the twice as thick Piedford. I can only speculate that it was either a planned release later cancelled or minted in small numbers for a specific group. Quantity sold N/A, issue price N/A? I wonder if RCM might clarify if this toonie exists or not?

Thanks wildflowerAB - If it was issued in small numbers for a specific group I would expect the Charlton value to be much higher. As it is, the value is not much higher than the nickel/bronze proof. Right now I still have a vacant spot in my Toonie album for it. Contacting the RCM might help but being a new member I'm not sure how to do that.

I spent a few years looking for one and never found any. There are several other 'questionable' entries in the catalogue so I've just chalked it up as one of those.

Has anyone ever asked the RCM about this coin? I am sure that they would have the records pretty easily at hand. Or at least an explanation (if it was not a mistake in the Charlton)

Good luck with the RCM, they are very uncooperative in the most simple questions regarding mintages.

I agree John. They have a difficult time answering questions about recent coins, so a 20 year coin that may not even exists may prove to be a challenge.
