I got this coin recently at my local flea market and I paid 5 dollars. Was this a good buy and what grade would this get?

Your coin looks to be VF-EF But it is still a pretty much Melt value coin, Sorry.
Still it IS Stirling Silver though

I forgot to do this.

These 6d coins have a nice coat of arms on them and are quite a nice little coin, I don't think you wasted your $5 on this
BTW this coin was actually minted at the San Francisco Mint and not in Aus .

A nice coin like yours runs $3 to $5, you didn't really overpay.

During the war, the US mints took over coinage production for much of Australia, the Dutch Indies, Dutch Caribbean, and of course the 1944 Philippines coinage.

Australia took over a lot of the British India coinage, as well.
