Since I recently started searching halves, I'm am spending them here and there, with some going back to the bank in small quantities. I have been spending some on smaller purchases such as small grocery store purchases and gas at the gas station. I have had some weird looks and stories when I give the cashiers a stack at these places. Such as... I spend a few at burger King this past week and the next person in line asked the cashier " did he just buy his meal with silver dollars" and procedded to ask if he could buy them from her so she did and gave me a evil look after he looked at them and realized they weren't silver At the gas station. I spent $10 in gas with them and the cashier goes " you really want to spend these? These are worth alot of money" I said yes cause I have plenty more where this came from... At another gas station the cashier was like I haven't seen these in years and told me she was going to buy them out out the register... At the grocery store I gave the cashier $10 worth and she had to call the manager on the phone they have at the register to see what slot to put them in, she maanger told her to put them with the quarters lol.... At another grocery store the cashier goes WOW I have never saw such big coins, and put them under her register tray where they put big bills sometimes.... It's been alot of fun spending these here and there and the weird looks and comments I get from them have been interesting Edited by CoinRumbles 08/13/2016 11:45 am

Yes, I got a couple of boxes of dollar coins a year ago and have been spending them for coffee. The folks at Dunkin Donuts & Starbucks know me as the "dollar coin guy."

Lady at the record store was blown away when I paid her with half dollars yesterday. Sometimes I get asked if they are half dollars or dollar coins. I could probably tell them they were dollars if I was dishonest. Spent a couple of Susan B Anthony dollars about a month ago; the cashier thought they were quarters and was waiting for more money when I told him I just gave him $2.

Best story concerns the Susan B dollars. The cashier ran over to the courtesy counter to see if she was allowed to accept them, she never saw them before.
I usually dump halves at several banks, just not the ones I get them from. But I have used them to purchase groceries with interesting results. I too had a cashier expect me to give her more money since she thought the halves were only quarters.
Another cashier buys them from me, I only charge her face value. Any time I go to that store she asks if I have some halves, I always keep some in my car's ash tray (since I don't smoke) so I can have them when I visit her store. She's offered me $2 for Ike's. Someday I'll sell her a few. Now, if I can only get people to pay me for all the wheat pennies I have accumulated over the years. Twenty five cents each sounds fair to me.

Went to Walmart the other day and gave the cashier $10 in halves and she goes oh my, I don't have any place in the register to put these, she counted them out and the next person in line goes ohhh can I buy those, as she was counting, so the cashier gave them to the person and gave the cashier a $10 bill in exchange so everybody was happy!

So I have had most of the experiences above using Halfs to pay. But I would have to say that my most notable experiances are not with Coins but with 2 dollar bills. I actually go to my bank once a month or so and will pick up $40 dollars worth or so. I use them as tips at local restaurants or bars that I frequent often. All the waitress's want me as their customer so they can get these "super rare" bills. Even though I tell them that anyone can get them. But I wills say that by doing this my service at any of these returants/bars are top notch.

Stopped at the grocery store and made a $7.00 purchase in halves I pulled them out and the cashier says "oh honey you don't want to spend these, these are JFK half dollars, they are very rare and made of silver" I said no, I told her I collect coins and these are the dud ones I don't want. She Said they are still worth ALOT of money. I said that's ok take them and she bought all $10.00 worth in my pocket. All was happy I got rid of marked up beat up halves for some green for more to buy at the bank to get a chance to get some "real silver"

I will occasionally buy any "weird coins" from the bank or stores that I am at if I can strike a rapport with the cashiers. I make a point of taking anything they offer as "weird" even if it is a common Golden Dollar. This way they are more likely to sell me the foreign or unusual stuff (halves, Ikes, SBA's deuces etc.). I may then have received some of your spenders! Anything common, like Golden Dollars, clad halves etc. usually gets tossed in my chum jar and when that gets filled I CoinStar it for Apple Gift Cards that the wife and I use for apps and movies. (No CoinStar fees when getting gift cards.) I don't roll hunt as often as I would like and when I do it is usually a box or two of nickels and pennies. The remains just get added to the chum jar as well. Occasionally I will be in the store or the bank and the cashier will see me and tell me they found something weird and occasionally it is cool. I get Ikes on occasion this way and got a Morgan dollar a few years ago. I will occasionally re-spend halves and Goldens here and there and have seen the gamut of reactions, from "Sorry I don't think we take these" to not even looking twice at it. If they tell me they won't accept it I will tell them it is regular US currency but I won't push it since they are not required to accept it.

A few days ago I accidentally jammed a vending machine with a half dollar.
The few times I've given halves to a cashier, they usually mistake it for a dollar coin or a quarter and I have to explain that it's a half dollar and that it's worth 50 cents. They almost always ask a coworker about it anyway.

Here in NJ, the Garden State Parkway (toll road) still has exact change lanes with coin baskets. The tolls are either $1.50 or $1.00 depending on the specific ones. The baskets accept the modern dollar coins and Kennedy halves and are much easier than counting quarters. (Obviously, I do not have EZ Pass.) It is kind of fun to watch the cashiers at grocery stores and fast food restaurants not know where to put them in the cash drawers. I sometimes will leave them as tips at the diner. The waitresses think they are getting something really valuable.

Stopped at Home Depot this morning to pick up a few things and as I headed to self checkout to use up some halves the cashier said I can help you over here, so I told her I only have half dollars and she said I don't care. So she rang me up and I put 4 rolls of halves on the counter and she said oh cool, I have never saw half rolls before and took them without no issue. She counted one roll and measured the other 3 rolls with the one she counted and said to me it's about time people start using real money!
