A customer came into LCS.

Asking if there is a better value for a large or small mint mark on
a 1929 S Mercury dime.

I have always thought that different size mint marks were common
on Mercury dimes ...

Looking for opinions

Did a quick search and came up with nothing, so will say no difference in value on the 1929, but will wait for others.

I don't know anything about it either, but the RedBook makes mention of two different sized "S" on the 1928 coins. They list it as a footnote which means they could have easily attached the same footnote to 1929. The only thing I can think is they say in 1928 that 80% were small "S", so maybe it was more even in 1929 and therefore not valuable. It isn't in the Cherrypicker's guide either. Unless it was something amazingly rare I really think there would be some mention of it if there was any difference in value.

They look the same size to me, the one on the left looks like it was punched deeper into the die

PCGS Coin Facts only notes the FS101 DDO as a variety. You could suggest he/she purchase one of each to cover the bases.

Thanks all

I did check with RedBook.

One note directs reader to page 22. On that page, one line mentions
that prior to 1945 the mint used different size mint marks in same year.
(Not the exact words)

As mentioned above, if it rare or a coin having better value ..
More of us would know about it.

I recall that there were large and small "S" MMs on the 1928 cent as well.

Many Mercury dimes have large and small Mint Marks. Little by little they are being listed in the Red Book and other publications about those Dimes. I have over 3,000 of those Dimes and many have large and small Mint Marks. It's just going to have to be someone sending in photos of them to Whitman or other coin publications.

Could be just the strike, but can't tell too much from the style from the pictures. Technically, there were only 1 style from that year.
