It looks to me as though it's been through some type of cleaning, maybe to bring out the date? But is there a way to determine the date or is it just a "throw away" coin? (Aka toss in the junk pile).

Also, as it stands in this very state, is it worth more as melt value or as is?

How-Would-I-Find-The-Date-On-This-SLQ?

This thing is like me at the prom--dateless.

I'm not sure if you can tell which year that is specifically, but it is a Type 2, and definitely not a 1916 if that is what you might be thinking.

Put it out of it's misery and let it be recycled into something else.

Since it's probably junk, if you want to play mad scientist, toss it in a little vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, the date might appear.

I'd swear it's a 1918 or 1919.

I don't believe this coin has any numismatic value; if you paid money for it, why?

This coin is just flat as a pancake. Why even play with such a coin? The idea of forensically identifying coins is crazy to me. If you showed me a 1916 LSQ with no date I just would not buy it. This is not why I have collected coins to buy junk at discount prices. You cannot bring back coins from the dead. Will we have zombie coins in the future. If we did it would destroy value of existing coins IMO. If you could restore all the 1916 LSQ's then the price and value of the coin would fall and make suckers of all the people who bought the coins in readable condition. You would be destroying value.

Terry,

I wouldn't want it for my collection either, but 1916's in that condition still sell for a lot of money. So if I ever found one unidentified in a junk bin you can bet I'd buy it, send it in to a TPG, then turn around and sell it! I don't think any other date in the series (even the semi-key dates) would bring any real premium even if you could tell the date by some key marker.

I believe you've found a Ghost coin. Or that is what the figure on it looks like.

Lol,I found it in an old coin lot. Paid $10 for some old silver coins. I was just curious of the date since I don't collect for monetary value.
