This appears to be a die crack from 1 edge to the other. Still relatively new at this so I just want to make sure its what I think it is. I have noticed that die cracks dont seem to go up in value over time. Why?

Need better pics but going by these pics I do not think it is a die crack. Maybe a scratch, post mint?

I agree. It is incuse. Die cracks are not straight and they are raised. Looks like a cut on the coin. You can see the copper layer underneath on one spot.

Die cracks occur over the normal course of production. Anything made out of metal is prone to fracturing when it takes a beating over a period of time. I would guess that they don't all crack before getting replaced but so many do that die cracks are not all that rare.

When you see a die crack, you're looking at the result of a die state; that is the condition the die was in when the coin was made.

Anyway, the value on error coins or die cracks depends upon the interest of the consumer. Since die cracks aren't rare the prices remain fairly low.

That being said, I see that they do sell. It's just a matter of consumer interest.

I think they're fun to find, but I can't imagine buying one.

Thanks for the pointers. They are very helpful. I didn't think it was a scratch because generally when I've seen a scratch it leaves areas not marred. Usually just before or after where there is a raised area in the design. It seems to skip a little. Where it crosses the letters you can see a slight Mark but no crease so I was assuming the letters got added after the portrait and that's where the crack was introduced. That's why I'm the Newbie and you guys are the experts. Your knowledge is greatly appreciated.
