I would appreciate any information you can give me about this 1856-O half dollar. What grade do you give it? Anything special about year or any other information.
Thanks very much.
dcas

Guess i'll throw something out there....I'd say xf40 maybe 45....not sure if graders would give her a details grade due to the rim damage,though..? Nice honest looking half!

XF-45. The rim nicks aren't too distracting.

AU-50 only due to lack of luster. This one has seen very little circulation.

I don't call coins AU with no luster. I think its XF-45, but its been cleaned, which is why there is no luster. The high points and the fields are much brighter than the protected areas. I think this coins was very dark and someone tried to brighten it up. I wouldn't be surprised if there are hairlines in the fields.

very nice coin. I have it at AU50. it may have been cleaned a long time ago and recovered nicely from it. in any case it would be market acceptable. I dont think the little rim dings would warrant a details grade.

Agree full AU detail, and TPG would probably concur, but I'm too old to accept a coin entirely devoid of any original surfaces as higher than EF.
