This one had the pvc still stuck to it when I got it. After reading thru every thread I could find on cleaning I gave it a soak in acetone. The pvc came right off but I guess there's nothing I can do about the funky toning.

I have heard of people putting their coins on a window ledge for extended periods of time so that they get some toning from sunlight. Maybe you should see if that works.

fiddler,

The 1923-S is a common Peace date in lower grades (up to MS63), so I wouldn't worry about giving it a "dip" if you want an even-looking surface for yourself. These are available at your local coin shops.

I've experimented with dips on "melt pieces" and it works fine for AU/BU coins, but won't do as well for worn pieces. Never use it on your precious stuff!

So where do you guys think this one would grade at? I've beeen trying to grade these coins myself before posting the pics. and so far Ive been pretty close to what you guys have been saying. Eventually I'll get the whole collection up. Not that it is that large.

Maybe it's just the pictures, but this coin seems to have a lot more wear on the obverse than it does on the reverse. Was the "PVC" on the reverse kind of a thick, yellowish, crusty, gunk?

The reason I ask is that I have a dollar that looks very similar to this one. More wear on the obverse, & a shiny, splotchy area on the reverse. When I got it there was a crusty yellow substance on the reverse that I soaked off with acetone, to reveal the shiny area. I strongly suspect my coin was glued into a belt buckle at some time in the past.
