Please help me grade this 1923 Walker with and without the cleaning mark on the obverse. I would like to be able to use it as a learning guide for grading Walkers.

Thingee,

I would grade this Walker an overall F15. The reverse has enough detail for VF, but the obverse wear brings her back to a Fine.

The cleaning scratches on the obverse would earn a notation from ANACS and probably a body-bag from PCGS or NGC.

I agree with the grading, When grading these mid grade Walkers, look at the back sandal first. If there is any detail on the sandal ties, the coin should grade at least fine, then take it from there. Since there appears to be no detail there , but the reverse is nicer, I guess a "net grade" of Fine would be ok.

All genuine 1923 Walkers were made in San Francisco and carry the S mint mark on the reverse, by the rim at about the 7:30 position. Are we seeing obverse and reverse of two different coins? I certainly don't see a mintmark on the reverse photo.

I see the obverse as F-12 details, net grade VG-08 due to the scratches by IGWT. The reverse is much stronger and rates a VF-30 IMO, with no serious problems. The big difference in wear is another reason I'm thinking we have two different coins here.
