http://www.ebay.com/itm/1909-S-Linc...AOSwaB5XwaAZLet me emphasize that I am not casting aspersions on the seller, but this is a big price tag for me and I'm trying to figure what I might be missing in terms of the coin itself. Interestingly, the price is almost exactly what the PCGS price guide says for a 65RD, but I notice that most others are priced two or even three times that price. The vendor has 100% positive feedback and a long tenure, but not too many sales of coins at this level. Is that a red flag? I'm not sure what else to ask, but this is *much* more than I've ever paid for a coin, so if there are questions I should be asking, I would be very appreciative if the wise folks here could advise me. Edit: to give a partial answer to my own question, rightly or wrongly, I'm not a big fan of "no returns." Edited by Centsei 08/28/2016 02:20 am

This is NOT a VDB. It is just a 1909-S.

Haha, well there is a straightforward answer; thank you. Sometimes I guess you stare at pictures of coins too late into the night.

Even a non-VDB 09s is a semi-key and carries a big price tag. If memory serves, these things are marked as $100 for Good in the latest Red Book. This one is a particularly good strike in a high mint state, so, priced accordingly. Nice coin.

That's only a $1,500 coin if someone pays the BIN price. It is pretty but it's not $1,500 pretty to me.

The seller is throwing stuff on the wall to see what happens. When I see stuff like this, I use my wife's and/or my son's ebay accounts to test low offers to see whether the seller has set an bottom threshold. Gives me 8 shots at seeing where the seller is willing to at least discuss an offer. Perhaps you could get a dialogue started at around $1100?

Nice coin, but not $1,500 worth And really, the shipping isn't a big deal, even if it's a couple of bucks high.

Only two sold on ebay recently, although not exactly the same condition: 1909-S PCGS MS65 RB RED Brown CAC Lincoln Wheat cent | $687.99 | 48 bids 1909-S/S S/ Horizontal S PCGS MS66 RD RED Lincoln Wheat cent | $1,581.00 | 43 bids A lot of auction sales elsewhere though, with CAC coins seeming to attract higher prices ($1200-$1700), and S/Horizontal S coins attracting lower bids (under $1000), with one exception, a PCGS/CAC graded S/Horizontal S that went for $1293. https://www.NGCcoin.com/auction-cen...coinid-12432[You will need to enter the Grade and Designation to see MS-65 RD sales only.]
