Trying to determine if I have the elusive brass version or the standard version of the 1859 canadian large victorian penny. Any help that anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. I know there are not many versions of the brass so its been rather difficult to gauge what I have. But it does seem to match up color wise to another that was posted on here that was a certified brass varient

Other side of coin. The liberty penny and other penny are just to gauge copper coloring

Hi Mario, Welcome to the forum. You pose a very common question with the high dollar value associated with this vairty. However truth be told nobody can tell this by pictures or color alone.
the only true way to find out is to have your coin tested by someone with what is called an XRF (fancy x-ray) which will determine the coins make up.
You could try a local coin shop to see if they have one, or you can try and hook up with someone from this forum how might have one.

hi Mario, from my understanding XRF machines are pricey and therefor nit many people have them. we do have a member here who has one who lives in Ottawa but my LCS also has one. they are in Clarkson village. if you'd like I can give you their number and address.

Does Colonial Acres in Kitchener have an XRF?
Alternatively, I have one in my research lab in my office - I would happily test it for you. All it would cost you is the postage...

It just looks like heavily cleaned bronze to me, but an XRF will show it. He should read the article that we did, Roger, in CNJ.

@Mario here is their web site, phone number in the top corner of the page. http://www.centurystamps.com/century/homei would say sending it to SPP-Ottawa would be a better move although it would take a little longer. I say this because SPP really knows what he is doing and will be able assuming it is brass to use the results for the best of the hobby.
