I don't get the logic. Why melt and get melt prices instead of bringing the price down closer to melt and selling them that way ?

Still, it makes no sense... because they are making less money.
Let's say the melt today is $1000/ oz. Since there is 1/2 oz gold in every spouse, it's worth $500 melt.
Why can't they sell the spouse for low margins, say $520, instead of melting them and getting only $500 ? And let's not forget the cost of melting the coins and making them into bars/bullion. That has to cost something to manufacture.

And gold coins are...well...gold, and everyone knows it. You have to have bars checked for authenticity.

Every point made here is spot on!

IMHO, the act of melting these coins is not only blasphemous, but a waste of time and a losing proposition. The cost to melt the coins, coupled with the additional cost of certifying "generic" gold bullion makes this less profitable than selling the coins below melt value!

If I had some of those, I would be cheering them on in their efforts. The more coins that are melted, the fewer their are to fill demand. and anyone who has taken econ knows that if supply decreases, and demand stays the same or rises, price rises. So, if you have some let those idiots melt all the coins they want, actually hope they melt every coin but yours.

Well, yeah, of course that will help yours appreciate. It just feels a little like Lex Luther nuking Souther California in Superman! Maybe that is their real intention? To sell them for huge profits when there are only 700 or so left!
