Hello everyone,
I've been collecting coins seriously for about six months and although I research absolutely every coin I find or purchase there are so many things that I can't find.
I am an avid metal detector/treasure hunter and have some pretty decent dig ups as well as great finds from Bank rolls and party store penny cups. I have no problem whatsoever going through the "Have a penny leave a penny, need a penny take a penny" dishes in most stores (much to the horror of whoever is with me).
I collect every kind of coin as well as silver, foreign currency and US paper currency. My main goal in collecting is finding the most valuable or unique items and adding them to a collection that I plan on leaving my two children when I am gone. The items I deem unworthy of this collection I sell in order to finance building my kids collection.
I look forward to sharing some of my finds with people who are like-minded and learning as much as I can in this field, so I thank you for giving me this opportunity to further my numismatic knowledge.

There is a great forum here for treasure hunters, too.

Digger48!

Awesome introduction. You sound like a very loving and attentive father--one of the most important roles/jobs in the universe.

Welcome to CCF.

If you want your children to appreciate what you leave them someday, you need to get them interested in coin collecting. Otherwise, they could just look upon it as something they have to "liquidate". Now, some children that inherit coins will have a sentimental attachment to the collection, but then that does not spend well at the store.

If they are educated as to what coins are worth, that will be better for them no matter what they decide to do with the collection when the time comes.

My children (grown now) are not interested in collecting coins. I have given a lot of thought into whether I should just sell my collection, or leave it to them to dispose of or keep. I probably should discuss this with them, since I doubt they have any idea what I have in my collection.

I do keep good records of what each coin costs, and the more valuable ones have an index card describing why the coin is interesting, rare, collectible, unique, providence, etc.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! I forgot to mention I'm from Michigan so I find a lot of arrow heads and Indian artifacts. The village I live in was actually a large tribal area until the early 1800's when the laws forced the local Indians into reservations and declared ownership of their property, pretty much like the rest of the country. I still need to figure out how to share pics as I am going to a property I found that has a record of it being used as one of the first trading posts in the county so I am very excited since the area is all wooded and hasn't been subdivided or built on since then. I hope to find an old foundation and some interesting treasures and I will take plenty of pics to share when I get back

Try to post pictures in sections relative to what is in the image, ie The world coin sections, or the US coin sections, or the token section, etc.

Here is the tutorial about uploading and posting images
